Former Australia vice-captain David Warner finally addressed the media after landing in the country following a controversy-marred tour of South Africa. While Steve Smith had given his statement upon reaching the airport, Warner took a couple of days to regroup himself, spend some time with his family and eventually take the executive decision to face the cameras.
“I’ve let you down badly. I hope in time I’m able to repay all you’ve given me and possibly earn your respect again. To my teammates, I apologize and take full responsibility. To CA, I apologize for my actions and the effect it has had on our game under your care and control,” David Warner said while breaking his silence on the whole episode.
Along with Cameron Bancroft and Steve Smith, Warner has been charged with misconduct and has been implicated in the scandal as part of the ‘leadership team’. Warner, along with his teammate Smith has been banned for a period of 12 months and will not turn out for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. This comes as a big blow for not just the southpaw, but also for the Hyderabad-based franchise as they will be missing perhaps their most successful skipper of all-time.
Apologies for the family
Ahead of the presser, Warner had stated that he wanted to stay with his family before meeting the press. He went ahead and showered his family with apologies as well.
He said, “I want to apologize to my family, especially my wife and daughters. Your love means more than anything to me, I know I would not be anything without you. I promise you I will never put you in this position again.”
Twitter was on Warner’s case following his admission of guilt. A few tweets, as vicious as they were accused Warner of inducing tears.
Here are a few tweets from all that transpired.
I have a 5 year old who is more convincing when caught lying and cheating than David Warner #AussieCheats #DavidWarner

Now we have the #DavidWarner instalment of snot and tears, three days after everyone else. Why do I feel like taking it with a healthy pinch of salt? #BallTampering

You get the feeling from Warner's press conference that CA will make an example out of him, just like they did with Symonds all those years. But is it enough to change Australia cricket team's culture ? #CricketAustralia #DavidWarner #SandpaperGate

David Warner can give anyone a run for their money even if they manage to remake Godfather this year?? @CricketAus#DavidWarner #CricketAustralia #Oscars

Why a #DavidWarner has to do this. They earn so much today. They play test cricket. 20-20 one days. #IPL n #BBL in Australia. Then they shame modern day cricket. N create doubts about the game in minds of cricket lovers like me

#CricketAustralia need to answer for their poor performance, decisions and leadership. Bring back #DavidWarner #SteveSmith and #CameronBancroft now not later.

#DavidWarner did the same lame press conference with the Joe Roodt incident. Gives you a good indication of the intellectual capacity of the goon. DUMBASS!
— Shady Character (@ArshadHamed) March 31, 2018
#CricketAustralia #DavidWarner #SteveSmith are too harsh. I think the last few days on these players has been enough punishment and all the humiliation. So because of idiocy of management and poor leadership we lose our great batsman.

Watching the 3 stooges fake tears at their press conferences confirms that they are sorry they got caught not for what they did. #SteveSmith #CameronBancroft #DavidWarner

#DavidWarner & #SteveSmith's acts have a much larger impact than what is being spoken about. Wouldn't cricket fans the world over have reason to wonder if Australia's victories in the 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 & 2015 world cups and other tournaments were achieved through fair means?

Sorry but I have no sympathies for @davidwarner31 , the way he has behaved over the years , it was about time his actions had repercussions . He might be a great batsman but he is a bully , a brat , instigator and then cries foul when it comes on him #davidwarner #sandpapergate

Just because they're all emotional doesn't mask the fact that they intentionally cheated. 1 year ban is justified as only now do they realise the gravity of what they did. They're suffering because they brought this on themselves. #StevenSmith #DavidWarner #SandpaperGate

#DavidWarner and #StevenSmith should be in Bollywood. I beat they can perform better than any Khans. #BallTamperingScandal

What a wonderful Scripted Performance. #DavidWarner should try his luck in Bollywood.#SandpaperGate

@davidwarner31 is holding out for a paid interview. How long until he's on either @sundaynighton7 or @60Mins ? #DavidWarner #BallTampering

#DavidWarner is a really really bad actor. Even Bhai can do a better job than this. #Sandpapergate
