English all-rounder Dawid Malan had a horror start to his Test career. The Middlesex batsman made his Test debut during the third Test of the 4-match series against South Africa. Malan came in to bat at number 5 after skipper Joe Root perished with a score of 29. He took his initial bit of time at the crease and tried to settle in his nerves. Just when he thought he had got in, a fire ball came his way.

It was the 44th over of the innings and pace bowler Kagiso Rabada had the ball in hand. After setting up Dawid Malan for the first five deliveries of the over, Rabada came up with a masterstroke on the final ball. It was fast inswinging yorker, to which Malan had absolutely no answer to. It landed right at crease, nipped back in with sheer pace.

A desperate attempt from Dawid Malan to get the ball to the bat failed big time as he fell down on his knees as the ball past his bat. The ball went crashing into the stumps to rip them off the roots. Well, it is certainly of no shame to get out to a delivery like that. The ball was unplayable and could have undone any good batsman on a given day.

The commentators on air were in awe of the delivery and former English cricketer turned commentator Michael Atherton rightly summed up the situation. He quoted, “Fast, full, swinging in. No disgrace to be bowled by that delivery, on debut or not.” Malan was sent back packing on 1 that came off 17 in his debut innings in Test cricket. For Rabada, it was a wicket that came by after a long wait of going wicketless at Trent Bridge.

Talking about the Test series, the series stands leveled at 1-1 each with the third game being in progress and the final Test yet to be played.
