With the advent of T20 cricket, the frequency of sixes has escalated significantly. The entertainment quotient of watching the game has also increased with the passage of time. The boundaries have been shortened owing to which the ball clears the ropes easily. The massive bat-sizes also have helped the batters to a large extent, so much so that even mistimed strokes sail over the boundary.

Some of the sixes also go out of the stadium and leave the audience in utter shock. Batsmen take charge on the cricket pitch to rip the heart out the bowlers and massacre them as they bleed runs profusely. The likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Andre Russel have redefined power-hitting in the own way. The dimensions of the boundary vary from venue to venue.

Dean Jones’ exciting suggestion

However, that doesn’t seem to perturb them and they make a mockery of the ground’s circumference. Hitting sixes over 100 metres is bread and butter for the hulk-like cricketers. Meanwhile, Dean Jones, the former Australian cricketer, has called for eight runs for sixes over 85 metres. He also mentioned the same rule to be applied in golf as well.

“The only innovation I’d like to see is that we are very good with technology, so every six hit over 85 metres should be an eight. They love Chris Gayle and all these boys that hit (the ball) miles. Same in golf, they love Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy who hit 350 meters,” Dean Jones was quoted as saying by Sport24.

“If the game is on the line and they want eight and hit it over 85 metres, and you are hoping Gayle, Russell or Pollard is there, it goes for eight. If you cleared the pickets in the 1870s or early 1880s it used to be a five and to get a six you had to clear the ground proper,” the 57-year old added while highlighting the significance of the same.
