Dean Jones wants Peter Handscomb to keep wickets for Victoria

Matthew Wade endured a torrid time in the first Test of the series against Bangladesh. There have been calls to drop him from the team after his bad performance. There have been calls for Handscomb to take the wicketkeeping responsibility. Dean Jones has said that Peter Handscomb must prove himself as a wicketkeeper at Victoria, before taking over from Matthew Wade.

There was a lot of variable bounce in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, which made it quite difficult for the Aussie keeper. Even after taking this factor into consideration, Wade allowing 30 byes in the match is a bad performance. The left-handed batsman’s efforts with the bat weren’t much encouraging either. He scored 9 runs in both the innings combined.

This is where the decision to give the gloves to Handscsomb can prove beneficial for the team. Doing that can free up a spot for a batsman in the playing XI.

Should do keeping for Victoria first

Victoria will play 3 Sheffield Shield matches before the Ashes, where Victoria can give Harndscomb a chance to perform the keeping duties. “He needs to keep for the Bushrangers first,” Jones tweeted on Wednesday when asked about the prospect of Handscomb keeping against England.

The 29-year-old has shifted from Victoria to Tasmania, hence it won’t be a difficult decision for Victoria selectors to hand him over the wicketkeeping duties.

Handscomb ready to take the challenge

The right-handed batsman admitted that idea of him replacing Wade is an interesting one.”I guess it’s an interesting one. I was doing some white ball keeping for Yorkshire in England as well,” Handscomb said as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald

He added that he is ready to do anything for the team and is ready to don the gloves if it helps the team combination.”Ultimately I’m happy to do it if it’s good for team balance if it opens up another position for a batter or a bowler to come into the side. But first and foremost I’ve always said that batting is my No.1,” the batter stated.
