The decision on whether or not Chennai Super Kings will retain MS Dhoni for the 2022 Indian Premier League will be taken once the retention rules are revealed, a top CSK official stated on Sunday, October 17. On Friday, Dhoni led the Super Kings to their fourth IPL title, beating the Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

A mega auction is set to take place for the upcoming season with the addition of two new teams on the cards as well. Before zeroing in on any decision on the 40-year-old Dhoni, the Super Kings wished to take a bit more time.

“The rules of retention are not clear yet…We are not sure about the number of retentions that will be allowed. And a call on that will be made once the rules are known,” the official was quoted as saying in India TV.

It’s not about me being there in the top-three or four, said MS Dhoni

After CSK’s win over KKR, Dhoni kept his fingers crossed regarding his retention. He also said that the rules set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for the 2022 edition need to be looked into. The Jharkhand-born has set his goals clear and talked about building a team for the next 10 years.

“Again, I’ve said it before, it depends on the BCCI. With two new teams coming in, we have to decide what is good for CSK,” Dhoni had said.

“It’s not about me being there in the top-three or four. It’s about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn’t suffer. The core group, we have to have a hard look to see who can contribute for the next 10 years,” he had mentioned.

In the meantime, the CSK official said that the team will celebrate its victory after Dhoni returns from the T20 World Cup in the UAE.

“The victory celebrations will have to wait for the return of Dhoni after he is done with the role as mentor of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup,” the official added.

Dhoni was earlier appointed as the mentor for Team India for the mega event. India’s first game is against Pakistan on October 24.
