Delhi cops bust a cricket betting syndicate

Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a betting syndicate after they caught a two youngsters involved in the crime. Reportedly, police arrested a restaurant owner and a class 12 student on 23rd April during the match between Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians.

22-year-old Rachit Gupta, who runs a restaurant in Rajouri Garden, and Vikas, a Class 12 student, were taken in custody after police received information about betting during the match DD v MI fixture and successfully conducted a raid.

“We received information from constable Ansar that there will be betting on IPL 2016 cricket match and the betting syndicate is operational from a house in Punjabi building, Roshnara Road, Delhi,” DCP (North) Madhur Verma said.

Verma said a team headed by inspector Shalender Tomar conducted a raid and arrested the duo from the building. According to police, Gupta had high ambitions of opening a chain of restaurants in the capital. In order to quickly realize his dream, the young man chose to indulge in cricket betting with Vikas, expecting to earn quick money.

The racket had bet about Rs 5 lakh on the match between Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians. Police have recovered an LCD TV, mobile phones, three chargers and a notebook from their possession.

Betting on cricket matches seems to have become a part and parcel of cricket. Police around the country are constantly on alert, especially, during the IPL to track down betting syndicates and stop them from growing into a scandal.
