Delhi HC issues notice to S Sreesanth, Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and others in the IPL spot fixing case: The Delhi High Court has issued notice to suspended cricketer Sreesanth, Chavan, Chandila and 33 others on a police plea challenging the trial court order to drop charges against them in the 2013 Indian Premier League spot-fixing case.

The trial court on July 25 discharged these cricketers and Justice Siddharth Mridul sought their response on the plea by December 16. The Delhi Police has charge sheeted these cricketers for cheating and conspiracy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). The police had alleged that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel were the masterminds of the spot-fixing scandal.

In their appeal, police said the trial court had erroneously interpreted the law by dropping all charges against the 36 accused. The trial court held that the Special Cell of Delhi Police was not able to establish any nexus between the accused and the crime syndicate that was allegedly run by the gangsters who were declared offenders in the case.

The BCCI in September 2013 imposed life bans on Sreesanth and Chavan while Chandila’s case is pending before the BCCI’s disciplinary committee. The three cricketers were arrested for their alleged involvement in betting and spot-fixing during the IPL. While Sreesanth and Chavan were granted bail within a month, Chandila had to spend more than three months in prison before getting released on bail.
