The 2013 IPL spot-fixing case, which saw three cricketers S Sreesanth, Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila were arrested and banned for life, doesn’t seem to come to an end. The Delhi High Court has now sought a status from their registrar to check whether all those discharged along with the trio have been served a notice that was issued on the police’s appeal in the case.

Justice Sunil Gaur sent the matter to the registrar, who will file a report on the issue of service of notice to the parties concerned. “List the matter before the registrar who shall give a report whether any of the respondents remain unserved,” the court was quoted saying by ndtv.com. The case has been fixed before the registrar before April 10.

Police had moved the High Court against the verdict of the trial court

The Delhi Police had filed an appeal in the High Court contending the trial order was unsustainable. They submitted the logic and conclusions put forth for discharging the accused were not correct. On March 15, the Supreme Court of India had asked the BCCI disciplinary committee to reconsider the life ban imposed on S Sreesanth within three months, while setting aside their ban on the cricketer.

The trial court’s 2015 verdict had said the investigators had failed to gather, “all necessary ingredients to establish a prima facie case” under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The court then dropped charges against all 36 accused including the bookies.

Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan were part of the Rajasthan Royals team at the time and were banned for life for their involvement in the scandal. The scandal saw a massive inquiry being conducted in the IPL, which found that owners of Rajasthan franchise and the Chennai Super Kings were involved in betting. Thereby, both the franchises were banned for two years.
