Earlier in the day, former Sri Lanka cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya retained his position as the Chairman of Selectors for the next six months. The first task assigned to the committee was the selection of the squad for the remaining three ODIs of the ongoing series against Zimbabwe.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal fails to sneak in the squad, following his axing from the first two games of the series. The team looks the same from the first two ODI’s. Pacer Lasith Malinga amidst all the controversies has retained his place in the squad, following a dismal display in the opening game of the series.

Zimbabwe had the first laugh in the series

Zimbabwe began the series on a terrific note with a win in the very first game of the series where they chased down over 300 runs with two overs to spare in the innings. In the second game, the hosts seized the opportunity following a batting collapse from the visitors to register a commanding win to level the series at one a piece.

While, the hosts needed a 5-0 drubbing in the series, to bring about a change in their ODI ranking position, and place them directly into the World Cup pool, without being forced to play the qualifier. The management would expect an excellent performance from the team, with the Sri Lankan team blowing hot and cold in the series following the dismal show in the Champions Trophy.

Lahiru Madushanka, however, has been dropped from the squad after the team management deemed him surplus at the conclusion of the second game. Veteran batsman Chamara Kapugedara takes his place in the series, with Sri Lanka needing two wins to seal the series and avoid a humiliation at the hands of the African team.

Sri Lanka squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Upul Tharanga (vice captain), Niroshan Dikwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Wanidu Hasaranga, L. Sandakan, Akila Dananjaya, Nuwan Pradeep Fernando, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera and Chamara Kapugedara.
