11 years ago, a certain player by the name of Yuvraj Singh ‘came in like thunder and left like lightning’ as Ravi Shastri described in Durban. He stomped in and wrecked havoc on the English camp. Stuart Broad was a youngster then and he looked hapless in front of Yuvraj’s belligerence. The fast-bowler tried every delivery out only to see them sail into the stands of the Kingsmead.
The moment is deemed as one of the greatest ever as Yuvraj became the first international batsman to pummel six sixes in an over in a T20I. Coincidentally, England needed 36 runs from the last over and that’s exactly where the left-hander’s knock made the difference. Deepak Nicholas may not a bigger name as that of the veteran, but he achieved a similar record in Dubai.
Deepak’s master-class with the willow
The 37-year-old is currently playing for the Roaring Lions team in Dubai Cricket Council’s Ramadan League. Nicholas, a Master’s Degree holder in Business Management, whacked six sixes in an over. He came to bat at number four and laid on to spinner Karan Tekwani in the 11th over. He scored 49 runs from 12 balls, but his knock went in vain as the team couldn’t chase down the target of 234 in 25 overs, falling short by 18 runs.
“I am an amateur cricketer who loves cricket and it feels fantastic to have hit those sixes. Frankly, it was never in my mind to hit six sixes, but when I hit two consecutive sixes, a few around me challenged me and I went for it,” Deepak Nicholas was quoted as saying by gulfnews.com.
“I hit the first six over the bowler’s head, second went over long on and third I hit to mid-wicket, fourth went over long off and fifth again to mid-wicket and the final one I stepped out and hit it over long on,” he added.
I was in my mood and frankly did not care whether I achieved it [the feat] or not. The unfortunate part is, since no one thought that I would hit six sixes, no one took a video of it,” the cricketer revealed further talking about how he managed to accomplish the unfathomable.
