Melbourne Renegades have been dealt a massive blow as West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing Big Bash League 2016-1. Bravo, one of Renegades’ key all-rounders, injured his hamstring while fielding against the Perth Scorchers in the thrilling match with the Renegades unfortunately lost.

Bravo seemingly ruptured his hamstring after diving to stop a Michael Klinger cut shot near the boundary rope. He was immediately seen in pain and was immediately stretchered off the field and could not take part in the match.

The West Indian underwent scans on Friday (December 30) and it was revealed that he would need surgery on the hamstring. This means that he will be spending a considerable amount of time on the sidelines recovering from the injury

“Unfortunately, my Big Bash season is over which is very disappointing,” Bravo said. “I’ll now have surgery and the rehabilitation to get me fit and playing at my best again. I want to thank all the Renegades fans for their support for me and I hope to see them again next season.”

His absence will now come as a big blow to the Renegades. The absence was felt on Thursday, when Aaron Finch had to bowl the final over of the game, defending nine runs, and after five good deliveries which yielded two wickets reducing the match to 3 runs off the last delivery. Finch, a part time bowler, however, bowled a juicy full toss that Agar cleared it in the deep mid-wicket region to hit the winning six and conclude a superb contest.

“It’s a huge blow, he’s one of the best all-rounders in the world, Finch said after the loss. “It’s an unbelievably damaging blow for us, but also for him because we know how much he loves coming out here.”

Renegades spinner Brad Hogg said it was now up to the remainder of the squad to step up to cover the allrounder’s loss.

“I drove him home last night and he was more gutted about the loss,” Hogg said.

“You never want to see players like that go down. If you see the footage, his ankle went below him and the surface was a bit uneven.

“At the end of the day, you do lose players throughout the tournament. We’ve lost James Pattinson for the first couple of games and that’s a big loss.

“And that’s where the other guys have got to step up and play their roles. If you’re going to win the Big Bash, you’re going to require all 18 of the squad.”

Competition rules allow the Renegades to sign a replacement but finding someone of Bravo’s quality at such short notice would be a tall order.
