Australia’s first attempt to redemption drooped as they slumped to a defeat versus England in the first ODI. They had their fair share of opportunities to grasp the match by the scruff of their necks, unfortunately, they let go every chance presented to them by the Englishmen. Four matches now remain in the series and the Aussies are in requisite to win three of them and claim the series.

The task for them won’t be a stroll in the park though. The visitors would mostly be concerned by the fact that their batsmen couldn’t go on to score big after getting their eyes in. The bowlers got Eoin Morgan’s men on the mat, but couldn’t be penetrative enough in the closing stages of the match. They aren’t out of the series yet but need something herculean to turn their fortunes around.

The hosts, despite their victory, won’t want to undermine their opponents by any means. The second contest will be played in Cardiff and the pitch is likely to assist the slower bowlers. Their spinners had a joyful outing last time around and may get a similar track to wield their magic on. Meanwhile, another loss for Tim Paine’s team will mean that the last three matches will be win.

Team Combination

England

The England lineup is likely to remain unchanged for the match. Jason Roy and Johnny Bairstow are the openers. Alex Hales may again be trusted at number three in spite of a failure last time around. Joe Root comes next and is a dependable batsman in the middle-order. Eoin Morgan’s role will be vital as well. Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali are the other specialist batters along with a strong lower order.

The bowling performed well in London and the team will want them to replicate a similar show. Liam Plunkett, David Willey, and Mark Wood are the fast bowlers. All three did well in the last match and the onus will again be on them to step up. The spinners in Adil Rashid and Moeen did reasonably well at the Kennington Oval and they will also have to be on top of their game.

Predicted XI

Jason Roy, Johnny Bairstow, Alex Hales, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (capt), Jos Buttler (wk), Moeen Ali, David Willey, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Australia

Australia may bring in either of D’Arcy Short or Alex Carey in at the cost of a bowler. Travis Head and Shaun Marsh are the middle order batsmen. Meanwhile, Aaron Finch, who opened in the last match may shift to the middle order. The captain will want to make amends for a rather disappointing outing in the last match. Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are the remaining batters.

In the bowling lineup, Kane Richardson may need to face the wrath of expulsion following a not so impressive performance. Andrew Tye and Billy Stanlake are the rest of the pacemen. Ashton Agar is the lone specialist spinner in the team. Michael Neser is likely to retain his position in the team after a decent outing in his debut match.

Predicted XI

Alex Carey/D’Arcy Short, Travis Head, Shaun Marsh, Aaron Finch, Marcus Stoinis, Tim Paine (capt & wk), Glenn Maxwell, Ashton Agar, Michael Neser, Andrew Tye, Billy Stanlake

Players to watch out for

England

Jason Roy- England

Jason Roy’s belligerent batting has been one of the reasons why England have been able to change their fortunes in limited-overs cricket. He has been a fulcrum in white-ball cricket for the Barmy Army. Nevertheless, he faltered in the last match having perished for a two-ball duck to Billy Stanlake. He will be eager to contribute with the willow.

Glenn Maxwell- Australia

Consistency has been a major issue for Maxwell and is a primary reason he hasn’t been able to stay put in his position in the side. Nevertheless, on his comeback, he racked a well-compiled half-century and was Australia’s highest run-scorer in the contest. The Victorian needs to back his previous knock with another resounding show.
