Joe Root has been in the form of his life in the longest format for quite some time. He once again made it matter when it mattered the most during the final day of the rescheduled fifth Test match against India at Edgbaston as he breached the three-figure mark for the 28th time in Test cricket.

As Root’s purple patch in red-ball cricket continued, he came up with a celebration in ecstasy to treasure the occasion. However, it was a humble celebration as he received a huge round of applause from the partisan fans and the dressing room, having put England in complete control of the proceedings to register a famous win.

The English pair of Root and Jonny Bairstow wasted no time in taking the attack to the Indian bowlers even though they had just 119 runs to get when the final day’s play began. Both seemed to be in a hurry to finish the game before lunch as they took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners at regular intervals.

The former English skipper’s moment of glory came when he played a late cut off a delivery from Mohammed Siraj which bounced over the head of the fielder at second slip and went for four. Thus, Root who was batting at 99 reached the milestone with that boundary as he had his arms up in the air while running between the wickets before going and hugging Bairstow.

The Test batting sensation then pumped his fists in delight, removed his gloves, and showed a gesture from his little finger before going on to kiss his helmet to celebrate the occasion. Nonetheless, even coach Brendon McCullum did not celebrate the moment in delight as he simply remained glued to his seat and clapped for Root.

England comprehensively won the contest by seven wickets with Jonny Bairstow registering back-to-back centuries in this contest. By virtue of this win not only does this series finish at 2-2 but India’s quest of winning a Test series on English soil since 2007/08 continues. Root remained unbeaten on 142 while Bairstow was not out on 114.
