England wallop Sri Lanka in the first ODI
The England cricket team produced an excellent performance with both bat and ball to beat Sri Lanka comfortably with 5 wickets and 15.1 overs to spare at Chester-le-Street in the first ODI on 29th June 2021. After winning the toss and deciding to bowl first, the Eoin Morgan-led England side bowled out Sri Lanka for a total of just 185.
Chris Woakes and David Willey sliced through the visitors’ batting lineup. While Woakes scalped a four-wicket haul and gave away just 18 runs in his quota of 10 overs, Willey picked up 3 wickets in the 10 overs that he bowled.
On the batting front, it was Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow who sealed the deal for the England side. While Root played the role of anchor to perfection and scored a sedate 79* off 87 deliveries, Bairstow blazed away to a 21-ball 43 at the top of the order and completely rattled the Sri Lankan bowlers.
For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera was the pick of the bowlers. The right-arm pacer scalped 3 wickets in the 8 overs that he bowled, and gave away 50 runs. The 2nd ODI between these two sides will be played at the Kennington Oval in London on 1st July 2021.
