England vs India 1st ODI Stats Review: Jasprit Bumrah shatters flurry of records, England’s lowest total against India, and other stats

Jasprit Bumrah tore apart the England batting line-up with his career-best spell of 6/19 in 7.2 overs, which also included three maidens as the hosts got bundled got for just 110, their lowest total against India in the ODIs. Skipper Rohit Sharma and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan then shared an unbeaten century opening stand to win the first of the three matches at the Kennington Oval in London. The former remained not out on 76 off 58 with seven fours and five maximums while Dhawan made 31 off 54 as India clinched the match by ten wickets.

Speaking of how the first encounter went by, Rohit won the toss and opted to field first in overcast conditions. Bumrah then began his show as Jos Buttler and his men just got blown away by the Indian pacer’s outstanding piece of swing and seam bowling. England just had no answers whatsoever against Bumrah as no batter got going in the innings. The first three of the top four batters grabbed a duck, which turned out to be only the second instance for England in the ODIs. Captain Buttler top-scored for his side with his knock of 30 off 32.

Mohammed Shami also took 3/31 in seven overs and in the process also reached his personal milestone of 150 wickets in the format. Chasing just 111, Rohit and Dhawan finished off the formality by stitching their 18th-century partnership in the 50-overs format. The pair guided their team to a comfortable ten-wicket victory in just 18.4 overs. With this win, the Men in Blue scripted their first-ever ten-wicket win over the English side. For his sensational and devastating match-winning spell, Jasprit Bumrah won the Player of the Match award.

 6/19 – Jasprit Bumrah registered his best bowling figures of 6/19 in ODIs. His previous best was 5/27 against Sri Lanka in the year 2017.

151 – Mohammed Shami reached the milestone of 150 wickets in ODIs.

110 – England recorded their lowest ODI total of 110 against India. Their previous lowest was 125, which came in Jaipur in the year 2006.

3 – Bumrah scripted the third-best figures of 6/19 for India in the 50-overs format. Stuart Binny (6/4) against Bangladesh in 2014 and Anil Kumble (6/12) against West Indies in 1993 are in the top two.

4 – Speedster Bumrah also delivered the fourth-best spell of 6/19 in One-Day internationals in England. Waqar Younis (7/36) against England in 2001, Winston Davis (7/51) against Australia in 1983, and Gary Gilmour (6/14) against England in 1975 are in the top three spots.

5108 – Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan reached the landmark of 5000 runs as opening partners. It’s the fourth most runs by an opening pair in the history of the ODIs. Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly (6609), Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden (5372), and Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes (5150) occupy the first three positions.

6 – For the sixth time in ODI history, Indian pacers have managed to pick all ten wickets in a match. It is also the first instance of them doing so when they have bowled first.

250 – Rohit reached the milestone of 250 sixes in ODI cricket. He became the fourth batter after Shahid Afridi, Chris Gayle, and Sanath Jayasuriya to achieve the feat.

1 – For the first time, India defeated England by a margin of ten wickets in One-Day internationals and their seventh time overall.

18 – Rohit and Dhawan have now third-joint most century partnerships (18) in ODI cricket. Rohit has also 18 with Virat while Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly (26) and Tilakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara (20) are in the top two positions.

118.50 – Shikhar Dhawan has scored 474 runs in six innings at a stellar average of 118.50 with three centuries and one fifty at the Kennington Oval in London.

1 – For the first time, England lost a match by a ten-wicket margin on home soil.

3 – Mohammed Shami is now the third joint-fastest with Rashid Khan to achieve the feat of 150 wickets in 80 matches. Mitchell Starc (77) and Saqlain Mushtaq (78) are in the top two spots.

26/5 – England recorded the lowest score of 26/5 at the fall of the fifth wicket by a team against India. The previous lowest of 29/5 was by Pakistan in the year 1997.

1 – Bumrah also scripted the best spell of 6/19 by an Indian on England soil. The previous best was 6/25 by Kuldeep Yadav against the English side in 2018.

2 – For the second time, the top three of the four England batters got dismissed for a duck. The other instance came against their arch-rivals Australia in Adelaide in 2018.

1411 – Rohit has now scored the most runs (1411) by a visiting player in England. He surpassed Kane Williamson’s tally of 1393 runs.

6/19 – Pace bowler Bumrah also delivered the best figures of 6/19 in an ODI at the Kennington Oval in London. Umar Gul had previously taken 6/42 against the home side of England in 2010.

1 – Bumrah also grabbed the best spell of 6/19 for India against England in the 50-overs format. He surpassed Ashish Nehra’s memorable spell of 6/23 which he took in the 2003 World Cup in Durban.
