The first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s turned out to be in favour of England as Joe Root and Co stormed to victories against India to take a 2-0 lead in the series. Following the shambolic performances, Virat Kohli’s men put up a resounding show and won the third Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham by a mammoth margin of 203 runs.

It was also India’s second win in Tests at the venue. After winning the toss, Joe Root and had no hesitation whatsoever to field first and the decision boomeranged on them as the visiting team put up 329 runs on the board in their first innings. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane’s 159 run-stand helped India clinch the ascendancy from the first day itself.

Thereafter, Hardik Pandya ripped the heart out of the English batting lineup with his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests. It was only after Jos Buttler’s quick-fire knock of 39 runs that the Three Lions were able to mitigate the damage to some extent. However, yet they conceded a lead of 168 runs. India scored 352 runs in the second innings and kept drilling one nail after the other in the Brits’ coffin.

Kohli, who missed out on a century in the first instance, made amends and notched his 23rd Test ton. Cheteshwar Pujara and Pandya also chipped in with half-centuries to ensure that the Poms are set with a daunting target of 521 runs. En route their run chase, the home team lost wickets in clumps early on. But Ben Stokes and Buttler cobbled together 169 runs to show some fight.

Just when it seemed that the duo was bringing England back into the game, Jasprit Bumrah ran through their lineup and racked up his second five-wicket haul. By the close of play of the fourth day, the writing was more or less on the walls for Root’s men. On the fifth day’s morning, Ravichandran Ashwin nipped out James Anderson to bring the curtains down on the encounter.
