Interestingly the last time this happened was way back during the 2011 World Cup semifinals against Pakistan.

After beginning the series on a high, Team India was completely outplayed in the second One-Day International at Lord’s. It was a day of milestones being achieved. MS Dhoni went on to cross the 10k runs milestone in ODIs after completing 300 catches as wicketkeeper. Sadly, India couldn’t figure out the run chase as they fell short by 86 runs.

It also happened to be the first time in years that an Indian ODI innings ended without any of their batters scoring a single six. Interestingly the last time this happened was way back during the 2011 World Cup semifinals against Pakistan. While India won the game owing to some brilliant bowling in the second half, they weren’t fortunate enough this time.

Indian batsmen falter at Lords after a strong show at Trent Bridge

The Indian batting failed to put themselves in a strong position. Chasing a total of 323 runs, they always needed a great start from their top order. While Rohit Sharma was dismissed early this time around, Shikhar Dhawan too failed to prolong his stay at the crease after getting a decent start. KL Rahul was dismissed for a duck as India were reduced to 60/3.

Skipper Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina then had to rescue them from the early slump. As soon as they started to accelerate, Kohli was trapped in front of the stumps by Moeen Ali. The run rate went down a bit as even Suresh Raina succumbed to the pressure. With 169 runs required from the last 19 overs and only two recognized batsmen in the form of MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya at the crease, the target was too far-fetched.

Their innings was wrapped up on 236 and no batsman had managed to clear the ropes. This is one among the many things that were surprising from the Indian team’s perspective.
