West Indies hold an edge over England at the end of stumps on the second day thanks to an inspired spell of bowling from their captain Jason Holder. After the overnight pair was dismissed by Shannon Gabriel, the No.1 ranked all-rounder ran through England’s line-up who were bowled out for just 204. Things would have been far worse if not for a 67-run stand between Ben Stokes (45) and Jos Buttler (35) for the 6th wicket. West Indies made a steady start in the reply as they ended the day at 57/1.

Here are all the statistical highlights during the domination by the West Indies pacers on the 2nd day:

Holder’s day out with records:

9 – Jason Holder has picked up as many as nine 5-wicket hauls in International Cricket as captain; the joint second most 5-fers for any skipper in International matches. The 5-fer in Southampton was Holder’s 7th 5-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Stats: Jason Holder registers his best bowling figures with a record 6-wicket haul

6/42 – Holder’s bowling figures of 6/42 are the best for a pacer in Test cricket as captain since Shaun Pollock’s 6/30 against Sri Lanka in the 2001 Cape Town Test match.

Rescue act of Stokes:

5 – The partnership with Jos Buttler was the 5th instance of Ben Stokes sharing a 50+ stand for the 6th wicket after England were five wickets down inside 100 in Test cricket. The other four such partnerships of Stokes came while batting with Jonny Bairstow.

For England, Alan Knott has been part of ten such partnerships in this format while Sir Ian Botham, Andrew Flintoff and Bairstow were also involved in five stands.

Gabriel and Holder share the wickets:

2 – Only the second time in 28 years that two West Indies bowlers shared ten wickets between them during a Test inning. Gabriel picked the first three and the last wicket of England’s innings while Holder claimed the remaining wickets.

The previous such instance came during Sri Lanka’s 2nd innings in the 2018 Gros Islet Test. Gabriel claimed eight wickets while Kemar Roach took the remaining two wickets.

Burns @ 1000:

1009 – Rory Burns has completed 1000 Test runs in 30 innings he batted across 16 matches thus far. Burns is now the first England opener with 1000 Test runs among the players who have made their debut since 2007. In the last 14 years, only three players have scored 1000+ Test runs while opening the innings for England – Andrew Strauss, Sir Alastair Cook and Rory Burns.

England’s top-order caught in front:

3 – England’s top four batsmen were either dismissed bowled or LBW during the first innings. This is only the 3rd instance of England’s top four getting out via bowled or LBW in a Test innings since 2000.

The previous instance was during the 2017 Birmingham Test also against West Indies while the other such occasion in the last two decades came during the 2008 Mohali Test against India.
