The English contingent taking part in the Indian Premier League have demanded a change in their agreement as the players who aren’t centrally contracted to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and have lesser price tags end up in a hole with all the deductions present due to clauses prevalent in the contract.

According to the present contract, English players have to reimburse their respective franchises for their absence in the IPL. Additionally, the Test players in the English ranks have to deposit 0.5% of their annual salary to their team for each day they miss the action due to national duties.

Furthermore, the players who are paid only by their clubs, i.e, without ECB’s central contract have to pay 1% of their fees for the first 21 days. The amount gradually tapers off to 0.7 % per day at the end of three weeks. This has led to a conundrum for the players who do not have a central ECB contracts and are bought by the franchise at a low price as per reports in DailyMail.

The concerns for these players do not end here. Due to the four foreign player policy, many of the players have to sit out in the majority of the games. In an event where the player misses out due to injury or non-selection, IPL franchisees have the provision to deduct up to 20% of their stays in India.

According to the same report, an international player from England was hit so severely by the IPL financially in 2016 that he considered that sitting at home would have been better off. Some of them even have to give their entire wage away due to clauses imposed by the IPL franchises in the contract for injuries or national duties.

Therefore, the English players have demanded changes in their contracts for the IPL which has remained the same since 2009 when they roped in star players such as Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, who were a part of England’s A list contracts. Further, 2020’s new English Twenty20 has been modelled taking into account the IPL contract template, which further heavily dilutes their wages
