"I feel that we’ve got a strong enough squad to select from and fill that hole. So, hopefully it doesn’t effect us too much," quoted Eoin Morgan.

English skipper Eoin Morgan opted to stay optimistic despite the recent fiasco that engulfed English cricket. Ahead of the fourth ODI against West Indies, two of the premier English players were excluded from the squad. Ben Stokes was arrested in Bristol following an alleged brawl and Alex Hales was also reportedly excluded from the squad from the same reason.

The selectors were quick to name the replacements for the two players. Batsmen Sam Billings and Jason Roy found places in the team for the final two ODIs. As per the quotes in Express.co.uk, Eoin Morgan accepted that the entire scene has been a distraction. However, he sees this as an opportunity for other players to grab the opportunity.

“We found out yesterday (Monday). It has been a bit of a distraction. But ultimately this game is about winning the series. There are two positions up for grabs. We’ll make a decision on that ahead of tomorrow. I feel that we’ve got a strong enough squad to select from and fill that hole. So, hopefully it doesn’t effect us too much,” quoted Eoin Morgan.

ECB’s statement

Earlier, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had confirmed the exclusion of the two players. They mentioned that Stokes was arrested on Monday morning following an ‘incident’ in Bristol. However, they did mention that there were no charges imposed on him. This entire scene has put question marks over Stokes’ availability for the Ashes now.

“Ben Stokes and Alex Hales will not be available for tomorrow’s One-Day International match against West Indies at The Oval. Stokes was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning, 25 September, following an incident in Bristol. He was held overnight and released under investigation – without charge – late on Monday and will not join the team in London,” the ECB statement had revealed.
