England cricket was on a roll till July when they won the ICC World Cup for the first time but failed to back it up with an Ashes win. They drew the five-match series against Australia 2-2 by winning the crucial fifth match at the Oval. The Three Lions are now laying out the strategy for the road ahead and managing director of England men’s cricket team Ashley Giles has already come up with some key announcements.

It has been learned that Joe Root will continue to don the captain’s cap in the Tests even with a new coach. Trevor Bayliss ended his stint as the Three Lions head coach after the Ashes. Pacer James Anderson is also unlikely to be fit for the two-Test series in New Zealand in November and December.

Morgan had hinted at stepping down last month because of back injury

Moreover, Giles also gave another update and it was about Eoin Morgan leading the England side in the T20 World Cup in Australia next year as per reports in Sky Sports. It is a big development since the Irish-born cricketer, who led England to their maiden World Cup triumph at home, hinted at stepping down from captaincy last month.

The 33-year-old suffered a back spasm during the game against the West Indies at the showpiece event and said he needed to come up with an answer to the question whether he would lead the Three Lions in the T20 showpiece tournament. Morgan said fitness was key for a captain and if he wanted to lead, he would want to lead from the front. He said while one has to be fit at the start, he also has to find form.

Morgan has led England in most number of T20Is – 38 – and also to the most number of wins, i.e., 21. England lost 16 games under him while one was tied. As a batsman, too, Morgan is one of the most prolific scorers in T20I format with 1,810 runs in 81 outings with 10 fifties.

Morgan was a member of England’s World T20-winning squad in the West Indies in 2010. England are clubbed with India, South Africa, Afghanistan and two other qualifiers in the T20 World Cup next year.
