10 Facts about Glenn Maxwell – The Big Show: The Aussie all-rounder Glenn James Maxwell, fondly known as Glennpreet Singh Maxwell among the Punjabis in India after a blistering IPL season is one of the brightest, most entertaining, talented, maverick and hard hitting batsmen of modern times. 1. Birth:

Glenn James Maxwell was born on 14 October, 1988 in Kew (Melbourne) Australia.

2. Early days and first class debut:

Maxwell made his first class debut on February 18, 2011 for Victoria against New South Wales at Melbourne. The Big Show had a decent debut scoring 38 runs and also picking up a couple of wickets for his side while the 4-day match ended in a stale draw. Only few would have known that the then 21-year-old would shortly go on to become a sensation in world cricket.

3. Early recognition:

He made name playing for Victoria and rose to national fame with a 19-ball half-century against Tasmania on February 9, 2011; the fastest fifty in Australia’s one-day domestic history. That innings surely got the crowds roaring and selectors turning their head towards the young and talented superstar in making. With T20 in full flow during that time, a national call up was just a matter of time.

4. ODI debut:

Glenn Maxwell’s ODI debut was a rather mellow one as it came against Afghanistan in Sharjah on 25th August, 2012. The hard hitting all-rounder could only manage 2 runs while going wicket less with his part time off breaks. Not the start the Aussie fans expected from him!

5. The Baggy Green:

Wearing the Baggy Green is considered the highest honor for an Aussie cricketer and given Maxwell’s “No holds barred” approach in batting, only few people expected him to represent Australia in 5-day cricket someday.

The feat came sooner than expected though, as Maxi made his Test debut for the Kangaroos against India on 2nd of March 2013 at Hyderabad during Australia’s disastrous tour of India. The Big Show flopped with the bat but took 4 wickets with his off spinners as the visitors eventually lost the game by an innings and 135 runs.

6. IPL call:

Maxwell was first signed by the Delhi Daredevils in 2012 season of the IPL as a replacement player for another Aussie, Travis Birt, who had withdrawn from the squad for some reasons. However, still new to the scene, Maxwell didn’t grab any headlines in his debut season due to lack of opportunities in the Delhi team.

7. Million Dollar baby:

Maxwell managed to crack a Million Dollar contract with Mumbai Indians in the next IPL season as the Aussie became one of the highest paid player in the IPL. The news came as a surprise in the cricketing world as Maxi was still relatively new to the scene and quite unknown compared to other existing superstars.

Despite all that he found it hard to start regularly in a star studded Mumbai line-up and eventually failed to make any impact during that season.

8. The Big Show:

We got to see the real Maxi in the 2014 season of the IPL when he was snatched up by the Kings XI Punjab. The blistering knock of 95 off just 43 balls set the season rolling for Kings XI Punjab and he emerged as the “The Big Show” the earned for his arrogant batting style and maverick shot selections. Those were the couple of months that made him a household name in India and the rest of the cricketing world.

9. Personal life:

Maxwell, unlike other Cricketers, is known to keep his personal life very private and there’s very little known about what’s going on in his life. Although, the Aussie superstar is currently said to be dating Jayne Egeberg, a not quite famous girl, but she was brought along as a date by the Aussie all-rounder to the Allan Border Medal earlier in the year 2014.

10. Lean patch and return to Test squad:

Glenn Maxwell had a bit of a lean patch in the 2015 season of the IPL as the all-rounder failed to get the crowds going with his bat. The Victorian man was also dropped from the Australian Test team due to lack of consistency in the longer format. However, the Big Show continued going strong in the limited over cricket for Australia as he eventually helped his side win the 50-over World Cup in 2015 with some brilliant batting and impressive off-spin bowling. The all-rounder was recalled in the Test squad for Australia’s tour of Bangladesh that was recently called off. Fair to say, things are again looking bright for the Aussie man, and he definitely has a lot to look forward to in the coming year.
