Fakhar Zaman got his maiden Test call-up in Pakistan’s Test squad for their tour of the United Kingdom (UK). He didn’t play in Ireland’s debut Test in Dublin. He also didn’t find a place in the playing eleven of the ongoing Lord’s Test versus England. He is predominantly a hard hitter of the ball and doesn’t like to play the waiting game. Quite expectantly, his selection raised a few eyebrows.

However, as a cricketer, there’s no doubt surrounding the abilities of the cricketer. He made his ODI debut in the ICC Champions Trophy last year in England and immediately made an impact as an opener. He scored a couple of half-centuries against Sri Lanka and England in his first three ODI’s. In the final against India, he got a reprieve when Jasprit Bumrah bowled a no-ball in the initial overs.

An impressive career for Fakhar

He made the Indians pay and scored 114 runs from 106 balls and helped Pakistan to a mammoth total of 338, which turned out to be a far cry for Virat Kohli’s men. He has played 13 ODIs and 15 T20Is thus far for his nation. The left-handed batsman also represented the Lahore Qalandars in the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) back in February and March.

Lahore finished as the bottom-ranked team and Zaman only managed 277 runs in 10 matches. Meanwhile, he was also their highest run scorer. Nevertheless, bearing in mind the approach he employs while batting, the Test selection was surprising. Pakistan is on the verge of winning the opening Test and Zaman may not get a chance in the last Test if the visitors manage to complete the victory.

He is practising hard in the nets with the help of throw-downs from the support staffs. However, he has found it difficult to curb his tendency of going for ambitious strokes. Once he tried to charge down the track and in the next instance the bowler hurled the ball at him as a punishment. Test cricket can be played be in an attacking manner, but one also needs to blend the approach with caution
