Mayank Agarwal has revealed that he was touched by Virat Kohli‘s gesture when the latter handed him the Border-Gavaskar trophy after the team won the series in 2018-19. Agarwal made his international debut in the third match of the series. In his debut game, the right-hander scored 76 runs where the team went on to win the game by 137 runs and the series by 2-1 after the next game ended in a draw.

Since then, he has played 21 Tests and amassed 1488 runs averaging 41.88 with four hundred and six fifties. He has also played five ODIs and could muster 86 runs. The Karnataka player made his ODI debut in February 2020 against New Zealand, where he played three games. In November same year, he played two games on the tour of Australia. The 31-year-old is yet to make his T20I debut.

Meanwhile, Mayank Agarwal has revealed that, as a player, Kohli handing him the Border-Gavaskar trophy was a fantastic memory. This was the first time an Indian team had won a Test series on Australian soil.

“Fantastic memories. I can definitely say it was a sleepless night before. Thinking about what’s going to happen, what’s not going to happen. I think as a player that is the most special feeling. As a player you’re contributing and the team is winning, so there is no better or bigger feeling as a sportsman,” said Agarwal during an interaction on the show Backstage with Boria on YouTube.

I had a great run in the home season post debut: Mayank Agarwal

Agarwal added that he had a great run in the home season in 2019. In that season, India played three Tests against South Africa and two against Bangladesh.

“I would say post debut series, I had a great run in the home season, something I’m very happy about. I pat myself for the kind of performance at home but with that said I’ve to be honest with me as a cricketer definitely getting more runs abroad, getting centuries abroad, more match-winning performances abroad would actually make me feel a lot better,” Agarwal added.
