Australia (AUS) and the Netherlands (NED) will play the 24th game of the Cricket World Cup on Wednesday (October 25) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Australia have won and lost two games each so far and are in fourth place. The Netherlands conquered South Africa to open their account and are in third-last place, with one win in four games.
Australia faced Pakistan in their last game and had a dominant run with the bat. They scored 367 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs. David Warner and Mitchell Marsh had a partnership of 259 runs for the first wicket before Marsh perished after scoring 121 runs off 108 deliveries. Australia lost the plot after the first wicket fell, and no other batter came close to what the opening duo had done. Warner fell after helping Australia cross the 300-run mark. He made 163 runs at a strike rate of 131.45. The third-highest scorer for Australia was Marcus Stoinis, who made 21 runs off 24 deliveries.
The bowlers took some time to break the opening partnership. But once that was done, Pakistani batters failed to capitalize on the momentum. The middle order was never in the equation, and hence, Pakistan were bundled out for 305 runs in 45.3 overs.
The Netherlands won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in their last game. They lost the first six wickets for just 91 runs, and it looked like they might be bundled out for a mere total. But Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek had other plans. They added 130 runs for the 7th wicket and helped the team cross the 200-run mark. Engelbrecht scored 70 runs off 82 deliveries, while van Beek made 59 runs off 75 deliveries. Their heroics helped the Netherlands post 262 runs on the board.
The Dutch bowlers had an average day on the field and couldn’t put some serious threat in front of the Sri Lankan batters. Sri Lanka did lose two wickets inside the first 10 overs. But they cruised past the Netherlands’ total easily in 48.2 overs with five wickets in hand.
Australia and the Netherlands played a warm-up game before the start of the tournament. The match was reduced to 23 overs due to rain, and Australia could only score 166 runs for the loss of seven wickets. The Netherlands made 84 runs for the loss of six wickets in 14.2 overs before the match was called off due to rain.
