Australia (AUS) will take on Afghanistan (AFG) in the 39th game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Tuesday (November 7) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Australia have won five out of seven games so far and are in third place in the points tally. Afghanistan have won four out of seven games and are sixth in the rankings.
Australia endured a shaky start in their last game against England, losing their first two wickets for just 38 runs within the initial six overs. However, Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne provided some stability with a 75-run partnership for the third wicket. Adil Rashid's quick double dismissal of Smith and Josh Inglis put Australia on the back foot. Labuschagne stood tall, scoring 71 runs off 83 deliveries, emerging as the top-scorer. Cameron Green added 47 runs, and Australia managed to reach a total of 286 runs in 49.3 overs, with Marcus Stoinis contributing a valuable 35 runs.
Chris Woakes was England's standout bowler, claiming four wickets for 54 runs in 9.3 overs. Mark Wood and Adil Rashid secured two wickets each, while Liam Livingstone and David Willey picked one wicket each.
In response, England encountered a similar beginning, losing their first two wickets for just 19 runs before the end of the fifth over. A crucial partnership of 84 runs between Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes provided England with hope, but the wicket of Jos Buttler fell cheaply. Stokes contributed 64 runs off 90 deliveries but got dismissed in the 36th over. Subsequently, England's batting lineup crumbled, and they were bowled out for 286 runs, suffering a 33-run defeat. Adam Zampa was the most successful bowler for Australia, capturing three wickets for 21 runs in his 10 overs. Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins claimed two wickets each, while Marcus Stoinis chipped in with one wicket.
Afghanistan confronted the Netherlands in their previous game. The Netherlands won the toss and opted to bat, starting with the loss of their first wicket in the very first over. Max O'Dowd and Colin Ackermann contributed a valuable 70-run partnership for the second wicket, offering some stability. However, the Netherlands then suffered a setback, losing the next three wickets for just 24 runs, leaving them in a difficult position.
Sybrand Engelbrecht played a crucial innings, scoring 58 runs off 86 deliveries, helping the team reach a total of 179 runs in 46.3 overs. Mohammad Nabi stood out as Afghanistan's top bowler, taking three wickets for 28 runs in 9.3 overs, while Noor Ahmad secured two wickets, and Mujeeb ur Rahman claimed one.
During their innings, Afghanistan managed to collect 55 runs in the Powerplay but lost the early wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz. They encountered another setback when they lost their second wicket on the first delivery of the 11th over. Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi then joined forces, constructing a crucial 74-run partnership for the third wicket. Rahmat's departure after scoring 52 runs off 54 deliveries left Afghanistan in a strong position at 129 runs.
Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Shahidi continued to build the innings, guiding Afghanistan to a convincing seven-wicket victory in 31.3 overs. Hashmatullah Shahidi finished with 56 runs off 64 deliveries, while Azmatullah Shahidi contributed 31 runs from 28 deliveries. Afghanistan's strong batting performance sealed the win.
