Sri Lanka finished at 241 all out in 49.3 overs, with Farooqi taking four wickets, the first four-wicket haul in the ODI World Cup for Afghanistan, conceding 34 runs in his 10 overs.
In reply, Afghanistan stumbled with an early duck for Gurbaz but recovered as Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah added 73 runs for the second wicket. Rahmat then partnered with Shahidi for a crucial 58-run fourth-wicket stand. The most significant partnership was between Shahidi and Omarzai, adding 111 runs for the fourth wicket, guiding Afghanistan to victory in 45.2 overs with seven wickets remaining. Omarzai played an unbeaten innings of 73 off 63 deliveries.
