The third and final ODI of this series between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka will be contested in Hambantota's Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium on Wednesday (June 7). After facing a huge loss in the first game, Sri Lanka opted to bat in the second ODI with a plan in mind. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne put on a good opening stand of 82 runs in 15 overs. Followed by solid fifties from Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis laid a strong foundation to go hard in the end overs, which worked well. Additionally, short appearances from Shanaka, Dhananjaya, and Hasaranga helped Sri Lanka cross the 300-run mark. Sri Lanka scored 109 runs in the final 10 overs. Coming to their bowling department, Dushmantha Chameera showed his class at the start of the innings by dismissing the Afghan wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz. It was all about spinners from that point. Especially from the start of the 30th over, Sri Lanka picked up 8 wickets for 45 runs, with Dhananjaya and Hasaranga sharing six wickets. Sri Lankan spinners took 7 wickets as they won the game by a huge margin.

Pitch Report

The new ball offers a moment in the air for quite some time, which is difficult for batters initially. Once the ball gets older or the swing settles, spin plays a vital role as the pitch gets older. Based on the most recent games at Rajapaksa International Stadium and the results of the first two ODIs, the bowlers definitely have an advantage in Hambantota. Overall, pacers have had a small advantage over spinners in the last eight games. While the pacers have taken 57 wickets, the spinners have picked up 50. The pitch will likely spin a lot in the third ODI. In the second ODI, the spinners took 11 wickets out of 16. The team winning the toss will look to chase, as the chasing teams win a high percentage of matches. The average first-inning score at Hambantota is 254.
