Indian Football legend and Arjuna Award winner, PK Banerjee, lashed out at Anil Kumble and his managerial skills when it comes to distinct personnel in the team. Citing various examples from his footballing career, PK Banerjee stated that a coach should be able to adapt to any situation to reach on top.

Before the start of the Champions Trophy, the entire Indian cricket fraternity was shocked to hear about the rifts in the Indian Cricket Team which recently reached on top of the Test ranking under the captaincy of Kohli and Kumble as the head coach. Apparently, the hard task-master attitude of Kumble didn’t go down well with Kohli and co.

As a result, Virat Kohli requested for a change in personnel when it comes to coaching as Kohli did not view Kumble as a part of the long-term plan. However, after India’s loss to Pakistan in the finals of the Champions Trophy, Kumble was quick to resign from the post, claiming that it would be the best for everyone to move on if he gives up the post.

PK Banerjee slams Jumbo

“Whatever situation arises, the coach must have extra ordinary man management skills to tackle the situations. Otherwise, he will not be able to reach at the top coaches’ stature. The coach must have an immaculate skill of managing his students. There should be both love and hate for the students. You have to move according to the situation.” claimed the Indian Footballer of the 20th century recognised by FIFA.

“Subhas was a brilliant footballer but he was moody also. Once I felt he should practice both in the morning as well as in evening session. But he just disapproved my proposal in his own style. But I never gave up. He finally agreed to my words and trained in both evening and morning sessions. I can remember that I was just after him, requesting him repeatedly and in different ways so that he did not get angry but listen to my advice” added PK Banerjee. He concluded by mentioning that Kumble should have been wary of Kohli’s stature and ego and managed accordingly.

“I was with Mohun Bagan that time. Once Bhattacharya insulted team’s one of the junior footballers. I scolded him but in a manner that he realised his mistake. So, there are various ways of managing your students. But why should you resign? Virat Kohli is now one of the world’s best batsmen. He also has some pride and ego. So as a coach you should handle his likes and dislikes with care.” concluded PK Banerjee.
