One of India’s best captains across formats, the legendary MS Dhoni called it time on his international career two years back on this day. Dhoni  was known for his calm nature and his ability to play an attacking brand of cricket at ease. He set a different benchmark for the batters of his generation and the world is yet to see a finisher like him.

Making his international debut in 2004, Dhoni served India for 15 years until the 2019 World Cup, which turned out to be his last international tournament. Even in his final game, the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, Dhoni almost took the side home with a partnership alongside Ravindra Jadeja. However, he was run out after making a half-century, and that was the last time the fans saw him in Indian colors.

Rishabh Pant was seen as the successor of Dhoni, and the grooming process had started already after the 2019 World Cup. While many expected Dhoni to be back in international cricket after a brilliant 2019 season for the Chennai Super Kings, the selectors chose not to pick him. After a year, Dhoni decided to quit international cricket, which came as a big shock for his fans.

Dhoni’s trophy hunt during captaincy tenure

With more than 17,000 runs in international cricket, Dhoni ended up as one of the best wicketkeeper batters to have played for India and was the most successful captain across formats. He started his title hunt with the 2007 T20 World Cup, and went on to bag the all important 2011 World Cup and finally, a 2013 Champions Trophy as well.

Dhoni is still the skipper for the Chennai Super Kings post retirement and he turned back the clock this year against the Mumbai Indians with a fine finish. No wonder, his fans have been quite attached to him and have not stopped showing love for the ‘Captain Cool’.
