New Zealand cricketer Luke Woodcock has decided to call time on his 17-year career. The veteran in the domestic circuit holds the record for playing the most number of first-class matches for a single team. He has featured in 147 matches for Wellington in the first-class circuit having made his debut back in 2001 at the age of 19 years. However, he went on to play for his country after nine years.

But Woodcock, a handy left-arm spinner and a brilliant batsman, didn’t have a great international career and played for the BlackCaps only in four ODIs and three T20 Internationals. He last played for New Zealand way back in October 2011 during the team’s Zimbabwe tour. Overall, the 36-year-old scalped four wickets in seven international matches. That said, he was a force to reckon with for the Wellington side in the domestic arena.

A perfect all-rounder

Luke Woodcock has decided to hang his boots after Wellington’s last Plunket Sheild game against Canterbury on Sunday. He informed the team about the decision after their loss at the hands of Otago in the previous game. Speaking about the same, Woodcock admitted that it is time to move on for him and the fact that he decided to stay away from Ford Trophy, the domestic One-Day tournament, was a sign of calling time.

“You always get told that you’ll know when things are coming to an end and in all honesty, I never really believed that. But over the last six to nine months things have started to kick in around that final stage of my career and the decision not to play in the Ford Trophy this year was probably a sign it was time to call it a day,” he was quoted as saying in a statement according to Cricbuzz.

He amassed close to 10,000 runs across the formats and also picked almost 350 wickets for Wellington and will bid adieu as one of the greats for the club.
