The former Odisha all-rounder KS Ranganna passed away on Saturday (February 10) in Bangalore. He was 85 years old. Ranganna was the right-handed batsman and an off-spinner in his cricketing career and played in eight over three seasons for his State. During this period he scored 199 runs and scalped 11 wickets for his team as well. The cricketer was born on September 22 in 1932 in Tumkur in Karnataka.

He made his debut at the first-class level against Bengal at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack in December 1959. However, he failed to make an impression in that game and got his maiden wicket in the very next match castling Ram Prakash Kapoor of Assam.

Contribution with the bat

Ranganna’s significant contribution with the bat came in his fourth match against Bihar at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur in 1960 when he scored 44 runs coming lower down the order at number 8. The knock helped him in getting promoted in the batting order and he straight away justified the faith showed in him. Ranganna stitched a partnership of 145 with B Sridhar Alva against Assam in Guwahati in January 1961. He also scored 49 runs which was eventually his career-best effort with the bat.

He also achieved his career-best bowling figures in the same game as he returned with the figures of 4/59 in the first innings. Ranganna also went on to lead the likes of Erapalli Prasanna when he used to play for City Cricketers in Bangalore’s club circuit. He was the father of Akhila Ranganna who reported for ESPNCricinfo for a long time. Anand Vasu, his son in law, is one of the prominent cricket writers in India and was the joint editor-in-chief for Wisden.

Unfortunately, he never got more opportunities despite being a talented player and could only play 8 matches in the domestic circuit. He also never represented India at the highest level in his career.
