All the four teams, Men’s and Women’s will be sporting black armbands in the final of the World T20 2016 in memory of those who perished in the freak flyover collapse in Kolkata. The statement was released by Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly. The collapse of the flyover in the heart of Kolkata claimed 24 lives. Ironically, the final of both the gender categories will be played at the vast expanse of the Eden Gardens. Both finals will take place on Sunday, the 3rd of April.
“We have requested the teams to wear black arm-bands,” former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly told reporters today.
At the moment, reports suggest that 24 lives have been claimed following the freak accident. The flyover, which was under construction collapsed in the northern part of the city.
The final of the World T20 will be contested between Australia and the West Indies in the Women’s category and England and the West Indies in the Men’s category.
The final of the World T20 was awarded to Kolkata during the tenure of the late BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya. To pay respects to his family, a five-minute documentary will be shown on the big screens at the Eden Gardens, an amazing gesture by the CAB. There will also be a cultural performance on display with musicians Bickram Ghosh, dancer Tanushree Shankar and sitar performance by the duo of Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan.
The Windies will be hoping for a double delight should the men and women pull off victories. This will also be the first time that the West Indies be in possession of three ICC trophies at the same time. The West Indies U19 side triumphed earlier this year.
