Following the conclusion of the ongoing two-match Test series against New Zealand, India are set to travel South Africa for a full-fledged tour comprising 3 Tests, as many ODIs and 4 T20Is between December 17 and January 26. While the national team was set to leave for the rainbow nation right after the conclusion of the New Zealand series, dark clouds are now looming over the tour.

The new variant of the COVID-19 virus, which the WHO named Omicron, has put the scheduled matches in limbo. With the cases being on a rise in the nation, Team India might hesitate in carrying on with the fixtures. Meanwhile, top officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will reportedly hold a meeting on Saturday (November 26) to decide on the fate of the tour.

I hope the biggest cricket nation in the world tours our country next month: Farhaan Behardie

After coming across the major development, former South African all-rounder Farhaan Behardien took to Twitter and expressed his desires to see the full fledged series taking place as per schedule.  Behardien reckons the future generation of South African players need this series. “I hope the biggest cricket nation in the world tours our country next month!! The future generation of South African players need it more than ever!!” Behardien tweeted.

As mentioned above, the new variant was named Omicron by the World Health Organisation.  Cases are on the rise in the Johannesburg and Pretoria, the two of the three venues for the Test series. Hence, players of both teams might hesitate in participating in the fixtures. Meanwhile, the popular belief is that this new variant has been discovered in South Africa.

Addressing the same, Behardien mentioned the fact is not true as Omicron was earlier detected in many other places in the worldwide. “Its not the ‘South African’ variant, it was detected here among other places in the world. In the famous words of Martin Van Jaarsveld, the great Titans player, WAKE UP!!! #OmicronVariant,” he wrote in other tweet.

Meanwhile, certain travelling restrictions have been imposed by the South African government after the new variant came in the picture. Hence, cricket boards of both nations must reach on a final decision sooner than later.
