Royal Challengers Bangalore’s IPL title drought seems to be a never-ending phenomenon. Over the years, we’ve seen various star cricketers represent the Bangalore franchise but have failed 11 times now. For the next year’s IPL, the team owners have decided to introduce a new coaching structure. Rather than pinning the responsibility on an individual, the RCB will now have a leadership group and appointing Gary Kirsten as the coach is the first step towards it.
New chairman Sanjeev Churiwala spoke after the announcement that the team has appointed Kirsten as the coach and mentor. He stated that several other coaches will be joining the camp. However, Churiwala doesn’t want to make a lot of changes in the RCB unit. Further, he was filled with gratitude for New Zealander Daniel Vettori who had an 8-year long association with the team.
We want to look at RCB from a fresh perspective
Whenever RCB takes the field, the Chinnaswamy stadium has always been lit up with a charismatic aura. The energy and support of the crowd has been second to none. Churiwala remarked that the decision was taken, keeping in mind the betterment of the team. However, at the same time, he wants the existing players to feel at home.
“The vision of RCB has always been to be the most respected and trusted T20 team and after ever season we try and understand what more we can do in terms of bettering the performance. From the next IPL season, we want to look at the RCB from a fresh perspective but not disturb the continuity of the existing players,” said Churiwala according to My Khel.
Kirsten brings continuity in the team
While the Proteas may have never won a World Cup, Gary Kirsten sure has tasted paramount success. The coach of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning campaign, Kirsten will continue with the role.
“Gary joined us last season as a batting coach and mentor. Now, he is taking over as coach and mentor. We will have more coaches and we still are working on the strategy. Gary brings in continuity in the team. He has been associated with the team since last year. I think we are looking at a cultural change. It is not just the technical skills and playing cricket, also about how to create that leadership,” the RCB chairman added.
According to Sanjeev, the main focus behind developing the leadership group is to the ownership together as a team.
“We’re not looking at a head coach. The leadership team – Virat, Gary and others who will come on board soon – can work together. The whole idea is to create a winning structure,” he stated.
