As the hunt for the new Indian head coach continues, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) are working hard to bring in a new and fitting face in the position. The BCCI has been desperate in their attempts to choose the right man to take the role.
According to reports, despite applications from various personalities, a section of the BCCI made an effort to get back World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten to the job. The board has also approached the South African cricketer formally, but Gary Kirsten did not seem interested in the job. The left-hander has rejected the offer made by the BCCI much to the disappointment of the Indians.
Kirsten managed the Indian team from the year of 2008 to 2011 where he combined with then skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to lead India to their second World Cup triumph in the fifty over format. After a highly successful and glorious tenure with India Kirsten later went on to manage his country, South Africa. However, he did not stay there for long because of personal reasons.
The other options available:
Now that the 49-year-old retired international has declined the offer, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag still leads the race to grab the opportunity. Big Australian Tom Moody is another strong option available to the BCCI who is giving a tough competition to the Nawab of Najafgarh.
Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh and Richard Pybus are the few other names who have handed in an application in response to BCCI’s invitation for the new head coach. Whoever is appointed will take on the responsibilities from the previous man in charge, Anil Kumble, who handed over his resignation after the Indian Team made their way to the West Indies. Kumble left the post with dignity after skipper Virat Kohli revolted against the leg-spinner during the ICC Champions Trophy and demanded a change of head.
