Gautam Gambhir on Sunday launched yet another scathing attack on former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi. Gambhir, 37, accused Bedi of indulging in nepotism. According to former Indian opener, Bedi attempted to push his ‘undeserving’ son Angad in Delhi’s age-group teams.

It all started after debutant Navdeep Saini took two wickets in his first-ever over in international cricket. The duo engaged in an ugly tussle where both took potshots at each other. Gambhir said that Saini was treated as an ‘outsider’ by Bedi. The legendary spinner of the late 60s and early 70s had said that he can’t stoop to conquer like the ex-opener.

Gambhir-Bedi engage in a war of words

Saini scalped three wickets in the game and ended up bowling a wicket-maiden in the 20th over to restrict Carlos Brathwaite’s men from setting a modest total. The pacer finished his spell with figures of 3/17 and bagged the man of the match award as India clinched a four-wicket win.

Soon, Gambhir congratulated the rookie pacer before hitting out at former Delhi District Cricket Association members Bedi and Chetan Chauhan. It was earlier reported that Bedi and Co. had opposed Gambhir’s plea of getting Saini to play Ranji Trophy. But with Gambhir’s support, the Karnal-born pacer went on to do well in domestic cricket.

Gambhir’s tweet read, “Kudos Navdeep Saini on ur India debut. U already have 2 wkts even before u have bowled-@BishanBedi & @ChetanChauhanCr. Their middle stumps are gone seeing debut of a player whose cricketing obituary they wrote even before he stepped on the field, shame!!!.

Bedi quashes allegations

Bedi was quick to respond to the claims. According to TOI, Bedi said, “I don’t believe that I have to stoop to conquer. I would rather not react to any comments on twitter. I have never said a negative thing about Navdeep Saini. Also, I believe if someone has made it, it’s his credit not any Tom, Dick or Harry’s.”

Gambhir hits back at Bedi

Gautam Gambhir was in no mood to step back. He dragged Bedi’s son Angad into the soup and said “Bishan Bedi talking about “stooping to conquer”, man who was pushing his undeserving son for selection or ChetanChauhanCr bent on getting his nephew in DDCA team. Shame. Also reproducing Bedi’s comments on Navdeep in a protest letter of 2013.”

Gambhir went a step ahead and attached a report from 2013 in which Bedi raised questions on Saini’s selection in the Delhi Ranji team. However, Bedi denied all the allegations and said that he played no such role.
