A member of the Indian team that won the ICC World Cup in 2011 and someone who played the match-winning innings in the final, Gautam Gambhir has chosen his Indian team squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2019 to be played in England and Wales from May 30.

The BCCI selection committee is going to officially announce the Indian squad on April 15 when they meet in Mumbai with captain Virat Kohli, who will be in the city for RCB’s match against MI. There are many speculations made as to who will make the final 15, as chief selector MSK Prasad revealed that there are only couple of spots to be filled with the position of no.4 batsmen being the main talking point.

Gambhir sticks to his words

The former Indian cricketer, who retired from cricket this year, Gautam Gambhir has chosen the squad on popular lines with most of the expected players being selected according to Hindustan Times. The team also features cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul, two cricketers who were in a huge controversy for their Koffee with Karan appearance. Both have shown some good form for their respective franchises in the ongoing IPL.

The surprise came in form of Sanju Samson as Gambhir’s choice for the batsman at the no.4 position in the Indian squad. Samson has been in very good form in IPL 2019 and scored his second IPL century which came against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Gambhir had previously tweeted relating to him picking Samson in the Indian team.

The second surprise, which is a much bigger one, is his choice of Ravi Ashwin in place of Ravindra Jadeja as the third spinner in the team. Ashwin, who was Gambhir’s teammate in the 2011 World Cup triumph, last played ODI cricket for India back in June 2017. Jadeja, on the other hand, has done much better after being called up during Asia Cup 2018, after Hardik’s back injury and played against Australia in ODI series at home.

Here’s Gambhir’s India World Cup squad:

Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Sanju Samson, Kedar Jadhav, Navdeep Saini, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav.
