Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are the two most senior and important players in the current Indian team. The former opens the innings whereas Kohli bats at three in the limited-overs formats. The duo is pretty consistent in their performances with the bat.
Moreover, they have earned the reputation as one of the finest batsmen in modern-day cricket. This has led to the debate in the cricketing fraternity to pick the best between the two. Now, Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener has given his verdict over the same and reckons that Rohit has an edge over the Indian skipper.
In the year 2019, the Indian Hitman ended up being the leading run-scorer in ODIs amassing 1490 runs with the help of 7 tons and six half-centuries. And, Kohli ended on the second position in the same list scoring 1377 runs with five tons and seven fifties.
On Saturday, Gambhir, the former Indian opener was also asked to pick one between Kohli and Rohit in the live Instagram session. And the 38-year-old said that the right-handed Indian opener is the best white-ball cricketer in his opinion.
He also added that Rohit Sharma is not an all-time greatest but currently he is one of the best. He also briefly explained his exceptional records and recited that Rohit is the only player with three-double centuries, five-world Cup centuries in an edition.
“I think he (Rohit) is the best white-ball cricketer in the world right now. He is not the greatest overall but at the moment he is the best. He is the only player to have hit 3 ODI double hundreds, 5 World Cup hundreds (in one edition) and he is also the only player, who once gets past 100-run mark, people say that he missed a double century,” Gautam Gambhir said while speaking to Sports Tak.
The former Indian opener also said that the fans always expect a double century from Rohit whenever he gets to the three-figure mark. According to Gambhir, Kohli is better as far as the overall stats are concerned. But the type of reputation that Rohit Sharma has earned in comparison to other players makes him special.
“It is very difficult to compare both of them. Virat Kohli is unbelievable. His stats prove that. But when your reputation is such that when you get out after a hundred, people say he has missed out on double hundred, that speaks volumes about you,” he added.
