Gautam Gambhir announced his retirement from all forms of cricket earlier this week and is playing his last first-class game for Delhi against Andhra in the Ranji Trophy. He is retiring on a high by scoring a fairytale century in the first innings and it remains to be seen if his team can pull off a victory on the final day.

The former India International is known for voicing his opinion against a number of issues and recently in an interview, he opened up about the tri-series in Australia six years ago. Gambhir took a dig at World Cup-winning skipper, MS Dhoni and questioned his reputed style of captaincy as the former India captain initially benched Gambhir in the CB series 2012 which was contested between India, Sri Lanka and Australia Down Under.

Gambhir speaks about society

However, this time around, Gautam Gambhir has slammed the society and has his own reasons for the same. He said that we live in a society which fears to accept the truth and doesn’t like being shown the mirror. “It’s not only about the cricketing system, in general, our society doesn’t like to be shown the mirror. We like to maintain the status quo and not look at the reality. I get suffocated by all this,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by India TV.

Last year, he was in the centre of a controversy as the Delhi Batsman had an ugly altercation with former State Coach KP Bhaskar as Gambhir criticised him that he played with the future of young players from the domestic side. He also had differences with former India cricketer, Chetan Chauhan over the selection of pacer Navdeep Saini in the capital’s state team. Gambhir wanted Saini to be a part of the side while Chauhan opposed it.

The former Delhi Skipper said that he was strictly in opposition of unfair practices and thus didn’t refrain from voicing his opinion against a number of issues. “It did affect me. I am human after all but then like I said, I could not have let the unfair (practices) prevail. Look, I am not being holier but some of the things that go on in our system are absolutely ridiculous. I was vocal about them and I paid the price by having an unfulfilled career,” concluded Gambhir.
