Former Indian opening batter Gautam Gambhir confirmed on August 19, Friday, that he would be part of the second edition of Legends League Cricket (LLC). He said that he is “excited” to be on the cricket field again and honoured to play with and against former greats. He retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018.

Co-founder and the CEO of LLC, Raman Raheja, reckons fans would expect a “nerve-chilling” performance from the former Indian batter in the competition as he put up in the final of the 2011 ODI World Cup against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium. The second edition of LLC is scheduled to commence on September 17.

Who will ever forget Gautam’s match-winning 97 in World Cup Finals: Raheja

“I am glad to share that I have committed to take part in the upcoming Legends League Cricket from September 17th onwards,” stated Gambhir in an official release. “I am excited in anticipation of being on a cricket field once again. It will be a privilege and an honour to rub shoulders once again with the glitterati of world cricket.”

Raman Raheja, Co-Founder and CEO of Legends League Cricket, said, “Who will ever forget Gautam’s match-winning 97 runs in the 2011 World Cup Finals? I am sure fans will be expecting to experience the same nerve-chilling performance from Gautam and other iconic players in Season 2.” Gambhir top-scored for India in the 2011 World Cup final with 97 runs, which India won by six wickets.

Gambhir was also part of the Indian team that won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and top-scored in the final with 75 runs. He was MS Dhoni’s deputy in the team for a long time and even captained the team on a few occasions during his absence. He captained the side in six ODIs and won all those games.

Before the LLC would be kicked off, a special match to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Indian independence will be played on September 16 at Eden Gardens between India Maharajas, led by Sourav Ganguly, and World Giants, led by the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, Eoin Morgan. Former players from across 10 foreign countries will partake in this game. In the LLC, there will be four teams, and a total of 15 matches will be played.
