Glenn Maxwell, on Wednesday, once again underlined his reputation as one of the best T20I batsmen in the world with a sensational match-winning century in the second game against India. Australia had their back against the wall when a dazzling fifty from Virat Kohli fired India to an imposing total of 190 for 4 in the allotted 20 overs.

Australia then found themselves in further trouble after Marcus Stoinis and Aaron Finch departed cheaply with just 22 runs on the board. However, Maxwell turned the game on its head in a blink of an eye with his knock. He launched a stunning counterattack to help Australia claw their way back into the game. India threw everything they had at Maxwell but nothing worked. Even Jasprit Bumrah failed to make any impact against the free-flowing Maxwell.

Such was the impact of Maxwell’s knock that the 191-run chase looked like a walk in the park. The hard-hitting batsman eventually remained unbeaten on 113 off 55 deliveries, helping Australia seal the series 2-0 and hand Kohli his first series defeat at home as Indian captain. The series loss was also India’s first T20I bilateral series defeat since 2015 when South Africa had beaten them 2-0.

Peter Handscomb, who shared an unbeaten 99-run stand with Maxwell, opened up about his teammate’s batting. He said he wanted to farm the strike in order to give Maxwell the chance to face the maximum deliveries. The wicketkeeper-batsman went on to call Maxwell a freak for his wide array of shots.

“Happy to see Maxi bat the way he did. That was the best seat in the house to watch that and it was a privilege from my end. I’ve been working on that one (the shot over extra cover) so it’s nice to get done in the game and I was trying to get Maxi on strike and take the game as deep as possible,” said Handscomb as quoted by News 18.

“Maxi stood up today and that can give the whole batting group a lot of confidence going forward. He (Maxi) is a freak. he can play all those shots that other people can’t play and he’s just maturing with each game,” he added.
