Shahid Afridi is 39 years old and it has been more than a year since he retired from international cricket after playing for the World XI at the Lord’s. However, the veteran still hasn’t lost his mojo and his stupendous prowess to hit the ball with ferocity has been on show in the ongoing Global T20 Canada 2019. The veteran hasn’t run of gas by any means and has it in him to torment oppositions.
The former Pakistan all-rounder is plying his trade for the Brampton Wolves in the T20 championship. In the first match against Montreal Tigers, Afridi didn’t get a chance to bat as his team won by 10 wickets. He picked up a solitary wicket though in that contest. However, the swashbuckling cricketer oozed class and confidence in the second game versus Edmonton Royals.
Shahid Afridi destroys the Royals
The Wolves won their second game and it was mostly due to Afridi’s blistering knock of 81 runs off 40 balls with the help of 10 fours and five sixes. Boom Boom, as Afridi is popularly known, came to bat in the 11th over and there was no stopping him. The Royals’ bowlers seemed hapless while bowling to Afridi, who kept unleashing his wide range of strokes with sheer authority.
He started the carnage in the 12th over, smashing fast bowler Safyaan Sharif for four scorching boundaries. His first six came off leg-spinner Shadab Khan. Afridi went from strength to strength and was severe on even the likes of James Neesham and Ben Cutting. Riding on the blitzkrieg, the Wolves churned out 207 in 20 overs. The total turned out to be enough as the Royals were restricted to 180.
The Wolves emerged victorious by 27 runs and are placed on top of the points table. Afridi also did his bit with his leg-spin, getting rid of his former Pakistan teammate Mohammad Hafeez. Moreover, he took a couple of decent catches of opposition skipper Faf du Plessis and Neesham. In the meantime, Twitter was all praises for Afridi. The netizens lauded him for entertaining them one more time in his career.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Afridi’s masterful knock
