South Africa had a pretty decent home season this time around in which they won all the Test series against the tougher teams like India and Australia. They also defeated Bangladesh and Zimbabwe who visited the country late last year. It was a terrific performance from them in whites especially as their bowlers picked all the 200 wickets in 10 matches. However, the coach Ottis Gibson is aiming the number 1 position in the longest format of the game.

They recently defeated Australia in the high-octane 4-match Test series by 3-1 and strengthened their second position only to stay four points behind India who are sitting pretty at the top. The team is faring decently ever since he has been appointed at the helm by Cricket South Africa (CSA). He came into the limelight after he helped England beat South Africa in the role of bowling coach last year.

I have enjoyed my first six months

Ottis Gibson, in an interview to Cricket South Africa, cleared that he has enjoyed his stint with the Proteas side so far and is looking forward to taking the team forward across all the formats. “I have enjoyed my first six months. It has been quite an experience, we have won eight out of 10 Test matches, and we won two big series. We played against two of the toughest teams,” he said.

However, he insisted that the main goal of the team is to capture the top spot in the traditional format of the game and was also satisfied with the fact that they won the series against the teams like India and Australia. “The same way that players set goals, coaches also set goals. The goal for the Test team is to try to get to number one. To win these two series, especially this one with all the other noise that has been going on, is quite rewarding,” Gibson added.
