The much-awaited England v South Africa Test match series is underway at the Home of Cricket, Lord’s, on Thursday. On this occasion, former Protean cricketer, Graeme Smith tweeted in support of his home team. England has previously won both the 3-match ODI series as well as the 3-match T20I series against South Africa by a 2-1 margin.
It now remains to be seen if they can extend their winning streak to the series comprising 4 Tests, or if the Proteas step on the gas pedal. England, however, have their task cut out for them as they take the field against Proteas. The team is going to be led by the newly appointed captain, Joe Root. Root was named as the successor to Alastair Cook, five months ago.
Graeme Smith cheers for the Proteas on Twitter
Former South African skipper, Graeme Smith took to Twitter to support his home team for the first Test match to be played at the Lord’s. Known for the success of his opening partnership with Herschelle Gibbs, Smith has the distinction of having been part of all four of South Africa’s opening partnerships of over 300 runs. He retweeted British journalist, Piers Morgan‘s tweet, along with his message for the South African team.

Root excited at the prospect of leading the England team
Having been recently appointed as the Test skipper, Joe Root is eager to take charge for the first Test against South Africa. The 26-year-old Yorkshire batsman told BBC Sport, “I’m really excited for what we could potentially be capable of in the future.”
The England team is currently at the 4th spot in the ICC Test Rankings and will have to avoid a defeat against the Proteas at all costs, in order to move up in the ICC rankings. However, to accomplish this, they would need to break the jinx as they lost the previous two series to the Proteas at home and their last victory against the latter was recorded 19 years ago, in 1998.
