As per the latest reports, the BCCI is set to announce two separate squads for the five-match T20I series against South Africa in June and the England tour in July, comprising one Test, three T20Is, and as many ODIs. The squad announcement is expected on May 22, which is the last day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) league stage. In a latest interaction, former Indian cricketers Nikhil Chopra and Mohammad Azharuddin discussed the squad for the series against Proteas.

Chopra thinks the selectors will certainly pick the players who they think are in line to be named in the T20 World Cup 2022. The former bowler added that the players who will be named in the India squad would want to retain their places and perform well, which will be favourable for the Indian team.

“Some youngsters who are in the fray for the World Cup can get the opportunity in the South Africa series and the senior players will return in Asia Cup. It’s great when you have a problem of plenty and the liberty to test your bench strength. The players who will get named will hope to grab their chances and do well, and in return, the competition and standard will be increased, which is great for Indian cricket,” said Chopra on Sky247.net presents ‘Not Just Cricket’ Show on CricTracker.

Selectors should prioritise domestic cricket performance over IPL: Mohammad Azharuddin

Azharuddin said that the selectors should choose youngsters for South Africa as most of the senior players will embark on the tour to England. He added that the players must be selected when they are in fine form and are confident of their abilities. The former Indian captain urged the selection panel to give priority to the players performing well in domestic cricket rather than to some solely doing well in the IPL.

“We have so many players in the pool who have done well. As the England tour will comprise senior players, the selectors should choose youngsters for the South Africa series. When they’re playing well, you need to provide them with their deserved chances rather than naming them when they have lost their form. Additionally, the selectors need to see the players performing well in the domestic cricket as well, and not focus only on IPL,” said Azharuddin.
