Former Pakistan cricketer and captain Imran Khan sworn-in as the Prime Minister of the country on Saturday. His party Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) won the general elections held on July 25 and ever since then, his oath-taking ceremony became an event. Three former Indian cricketers Kapil Dev, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sunil Gavaskar were invited for the ceremony. However, only Sidhu attended it with other two backing out citing different reasons.

The cricketer-turned-politician, Sidhu, reached Karachi at the Wagah border a day ahead of the swearing-in ceremony and was also all praise of Khan for his achievements in the political field. He also gifted a Kashmiri Shawl and went on to say that he brought a message of love to Pakistan from their neighbouring country.

Anil Vij not happy

Haryana Minister Anil Vij termed Navjot Singh Sidhu’s participation in the ceremony as an “act of disloyalty” towards and has lashed out at him. At the same time, he also pointed out that the former Indian cricketer preferred going to Pakistan when the nation was mourning the passing away of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

“The Union government has announced a seven-day national mourning following the death of former prime minister Vajpayee, but Sidhu preferred to join the swearing-in ceremony of Khan in Pakistan, ignoring the sentimental and grieved occasion of his country,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.

He also questioned Sidhu for his friendly relation with Imran as he chose his relation over the country according to the minister. “At a time when most of the leaders of the ruling, as well as opposition parties,s were present in Delhi to pay their tributes to Vajpayee, Mr Sidhu was “enjoying Khan’s celebration” in Islamabad,” Vij added.

Moreover, he also wanted the Punjab Chief Minister to take up the matter seriously and initiate quick action against the 54-year-old for his actions.
