English cricket found a new teen sensation in 19-year-old Haseeb Hameed. On a tough Indian tour, when most batsmen struggled, Hameed showed great character with the bat. He had an impressive start to his Test career as he hit 82 in the second innings of the Rajkot Test. He injured his finger in the third Test but still turned up to bat in the second innings for England.
Batting with a broken finger, he showed great character as he scored a fighting 59. Although England ended up losing the Mohali Test, Hameed had won hearts. He was ruled out for the remainder of the series but was praised for his efforts. Hameed has been a very successful batsman for his county side Lancashire as well. At the bare age of 19, he is scoring runs at will in all formats.
No wonder why the young opener has drawn so much appreciation in such a short time. The English skipper Alastair Cook was in all awe for the 19-year old. Indian skipper Virat Kohli commended Hameed’s grit and determination too. Interestingly, the youngster is named as Baby Boycott in the English cricket circle. The reason being an obvious one.
His hunger for runs is an unmatched one and that is pretty similar to former English batsman Geoffrey Boycott. Also, he is known as blocker by some people. That nickname comes from his very strong defensive technique. That was evident for the fans to watch when he took the field for England in the first three Tests.
In a recent conversation with England Cricket, Hameed was asked which nickname does he prefer. A very shy boy he said that it is Baby Boycott that sounds good to him. Asked to justify his answer, Hameed said that he tried very hard to find out positives about the nickname blocker but could not find any. Moreover, comparisons with a legend of the game such as Boycott is always a great honor.
