Kolkata Knight Riders’ assistant coach Abhishek Nayar opened up on Ajinkya Rahane, his former Mumbai teammate. He has called him a “proper team man” and added that Rahane is a very important part of the team in IPL 2022.

In their first game against the Chennai Super Kings, Rahane was the top-scorer for his side. With six fours and a six, he played a knock of 44 runs while chasing. He was one of the key reasons behind the team’s victory as his splendid start gave the team the lift they required.

Nayar lauded Rahane for the experience that he brings in. “Knowing Ajinkya, he has been someone who never played to prove anything to people. He’s someone who has always played for the fact that he enjoys playing this game and he plays with the utmost desire to do well for his team. He’s an absolute team man. If there was one player who would stand out and you can consider a proper team man, I think it’s Ajinkya,” he was quoted on KKR’s official website.

‘He has the calibre’ – Nayar backs Rahane to make comeback in Indian team

Rahane has not been able to perform well in the Test format for quite some time now, and as a result, he was dropped for India’s recent series against Sri Lanka. Rahane has been Kohli’s deputy in the Test format earlier and has scored centuries in England, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand, and Australia.

“In terms of making a comeback [for India], I think he has always had that calibre. When he came back from the Test side to play first-class cricket, he got a hundred in the first game. He’s someone who’s always got runs. Even in the IPL he has been successful. I don’t think he’s approaching the IPL in terms of making a comeback, I think he’s approaching the IPL in terms of making sure KKR has the best chance of winning the championship,” he added.

Rahane has represented India in 82 Tests and scored 4931 runs with 12 centuries and 25 half-centuries. He is one of the most experienced players in the Indian camp, and continues to share his experience and showcase his game at the KKR camp now.
