Heavy rains and winds in Mumbai cause massive damage to DY Patil stadium

The city of Mumbai has been severely hit by torrential rainfall since Monday evening. With cyclonic winds reaching up to 107 kmph in the financial capital of India, Mumbai has witnessed waterlogging as well as damage to property. The heavy rains have also put a halt to suburban train and bus services, disrupting the normalcy in the city.

Many videos showing the massive damage caused to the city have been doing rounds on social media. Amid the heavy downpour, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has urged everyone to stay indoors and be safe amid such stern situation.

The heavy rains have also caused extensive damage to the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul. Pictures of the iconic stadium, affected by rain and gusty winds, were also shared on social media. Sanjay Kumar, who is the Commissioner of Navi Mumbai Police, shared, “Huge Damage to one of the iconic stadiums DY Patil stadium”. He also posted pictures to show the current condition of the stadium.

In the past, the DY Patil stadium has hosted the final of the Indian Premier League as well as matches of Under-17 World Cup. The historic stadium, over the years, has hosted many prominent sporting events.

Along with heavy rains, Mumbai is also battling against COVID-19 outbreak which has wreaked havoc all across the globe. Since the coronavirus outbreak in the country, Mumbai has emerged as a hotspot. Maharashtra has registered over 4 million COVID-19 positive cases so far, with Mumbai being at the top. But with the recovery rate being 77 per cent in the city, things have improved a bit and people have been discharged post their recovery.

The DY Patil stadium, in March, had hosted the Reliance Cup, featuring many stars including India international Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder, marking his return from a lower-back injury, had hogged the headlines after smashing 158* off just 55 balls in the semi-final while playing his first competitive tournament in five months. The Mumbai Indians player had weaved his blistering knock around 20 sixes. The tournament also featured other stars like Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shreyas Iyer.
